Family Gathering Discussions Agreement

In light of the incident at last year's family gathering, I, _______________________, (hereafter "Family Member"), in the interest of family peace and harmony, agree to do everything in my power to avoid arguments at future events, and promise to communicate in a positive and respectful manner and adhere to the following rules and guidelines.

Out of love for my family as well as any friends or loved ones who may be attending {holiday/other} events, I hereby agree:

• Certain topics will be off limits for discussion. These include: {politics/religion/family controversy/money/etc.}
• "Neutral zones" for debate of any kind include: {the dinner table/kids' events/during games/etc.}.
• If someone else brings up one of the above topics, I will not engage, and instead change the subject, remove myself from their immediate location for a period of time, or otherwise refuse to contribute to or exacerbate any arguments. The designated family mediator, if conflict resolution is needed, will be {Name}.
• During any contentious discussions that nevertheless ensue, I will abstain from {name calling/personal insults/profanity/ad hominem attacks/etc.}.
• I acknowledge that {alcohol/other substance/etc.} can trigger arguments, and thus agree to {avoid/limit} my consumption.
• Violating these guidelines will result in {consequence}.

A separate, blank copy of this form is being provided to {all/some} attendees of the {date} event.
